Australia's captain Poised for a Major Role in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of taking part.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, aside from the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully starting in Perth. If not, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from several home seasons in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
