Blast Claims Three Police Officers During Property Removal Procedure in Italy
Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and at least 15 additional individuals got wounded in an apparently intentional detonation from gas at a rural property in northern Italy.
How It Happened
The explosion took place as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the house close to the Verona region to enforce an court-ordered eviction for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.
All three victims who died belonged to the Carabinieri force.
Arrests and Aftermath
A man and a woman were arrested at the site and another man who fled following the blast was apprehended soon after. Each of them have been admitted to medical facility.
The detonation could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the scene showed the property turned into a heap of debris.
“We are in a period of mourning,” commented the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who added that efforts had been made to displace the three family members in the previous occasions.
Background and Motive
The president of the Veneto area, the regional head, explained the farmhouse was under an court order due to financial obligations accumulated by the property owners.
Mediators had been dispatched to talk with the family members who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the Carabinieri came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe one of the siblings triggered the detonation.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander Commander Papagno stated to the media.
A gas canister had been set off, and the explosion directly hit our members,” he added.
Petrol bombs were also found at the property, the minister confirmed.
Injuries and Destruction
The wounded by the explosion consisted of eleven more officers of the police force as well as three officers of Italy's state police and a fire services member.
As stated by the local prosecutor, the building was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.
The prosecutor was convinced the detonation had taken place on a floor above the access point and stated to journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the incident, he revealed officers had “heard a whistle, probably the gas cylinders being activated”.
Local Response
“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors informed local news, adding that the trio had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than vacate the property.
“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”
Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto stood alongside other government officials in paying tribute to the three officers who had died in the service of their country.
