English Football News: Mejbri Banned for Misconduct; City Boss Insists 'Back Line Has to Get Better'
This week's English football developments, a notable midfielder was given a significant ban, a head coach has singled out a player's mistakes to prove a point, and the Manchester City manager has called for defensive betterment following a wild victory.
1. Mejbri Given Four-Match Ban and Financial Penalty
The Clarets' player Hannibal Mejbri was issued a four-match ban and a financial fine for improper behaviour in October's match versus Leeds United. The governing body stated Mejbri faced a separate disciplinary panel after allegations where he spat towards away fans at the 67-minute mark during a 2-0 victory by Burnley.
An FA release explained: “A Regulatory Commission has punished Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri due to misconduct during the Premier League game against Leeds on 18 October. The charge was that he behaved against the laws of football and/or in an improper manner and/or using abusive and/or indecent behaviour through spitting at or in the direction of Leeds United supporters.”
The statement added, “Mejbri later admitted the charge, with the panel handing down a four-game ban and £15,000 following a hearing. The panel's written reasons for the sanction are to be released in due course.” The team, currently 19th in the standings, travel to 12th-placed Newcastle on Saturday.
Maresca Singles Out Tosin's Errors to Prove a Point
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has argued that a lack of experience is no an issue for his team, pointing out that centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo's age did not stop him from having a bad game during the defeat against Leeds United.
The Italian coach, who manages the most youthful team in the division, does not feel that inexperience played a part in their setback. He made his argument by criticising Tosin, Chelsea's most experienced outfield player in the lineup, who produced an error-strewn display at the back.
“People always talk about a lack of experience when we fail to win,” Maresca stated. “When we defeated Barcelona, the draw against Arsenal, no one was talking about older personnel. I understand that if we lose, we are constantly searching for an explanation, but in my view why we lost against Leeds is not because of the experience, it was because we just weren't good enough.”
He added, “Who was the most senior player for us in the match? It was Tosin. Was he any good? Therefore, it isn't related to his age. It’s about those 11 players, they were simply not up to standard.”
Guardiola Insists Defensive Solidity 'Must Get Better'
The Manchester City manager has insisted the champions have taken lessons from their recent thriller at Fulham and the game has now been in the past. The team held on to claim a 5-4 win in a incredible encounter at Craven Cottage, having led 5-1 with almost 60 minutes played.
Coming after they fought off a Leeds fightback to win 3-2 in their prior game, it raised further doubts regarding if they possess the defensive steel required to sustain a challenge against pace-setters Arsenal. “That game is behind us,” Guardiola said. “Valuable lessons, hopefully. In the Premier League, for every team, you have to take onboard both good and bad in the good things and bad things and focus on the next one.”
“Of course I’m concerned,” he admitted. “We try to analyse the cause, so as not to allow the goals. After conceding three scored by Leeds, and five against Fulham you can see the two sides, correct? So, always done plenty of positive things. Yet how many attempts did Leeds ? Three? Scored two. It’s not bad. How many attempts for Fulham ? Five, six? So, the average of shots conceded is too high. We have to be better.”
4. Newcastle Prioritise on Livramento and Botman Contracts
Newcastle United's recently appointed football chief, Ross Wilson, has placed contract negotiations involving important defenders Tino Livramento and Sven Botman at the top of his to-do list at St James’ Park. He joined from Nottingham Forest in October and is reassured to learn midfielder Sandro Tonali is on a deal extending to 2029 with an option until 2030.
This allows Wilson to prioritise negotiations for Livramento and Botman's agents. Livramento's agreement ending in 2027 and Botman's in 2028, the club's efforts are being treated with a certain importance.
“The initial three or four days in the job is when I found that Sandro’s contract situation is much better than I had thought,” he stated. “But it’s well known that the club would want to extend Tino’s deal and also wants to renew Sven Botman’s as well. Those discussions are underway.”
Manager Eddie Howe is without Botman for the home game against Burnley this Saturday, with the defender expected to be sidelined for another week.
5. Nuno Confirms Paquetá Will Start for West Ham
The Hammers' manager Nuno Espírito Santo has confirmed that Lucas Paquetá will return to the starting lineup when the side play Brighton this Sunday, after serving a ban for the red card he received Liverpool.
“That incident is behind us,” Nuno remarked. “I am positive it won't happen again because he himself acknowledged his mistake. We spoke about it internally. I am positive it is over and it will not happen again.”
He also acknowledged the significant strain on his side, who are 18th before the weekend matches. “We cannot ignore it,” he admitted. “It's the situation. We must face it. We're fighting for survival. We can't hide it.”
6. Arteta Pleased with No 9 Stand-in Merino
Mikel Merino could continue leading the line for Arsenal centre-forward despite the club's usual frontmen return from injury. Merino has been playing as an emergency No 9 because of fitness issues for Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.
Merino found the net for the opener versus Brentford before assisting Bukayo Saka for the second in a 2-0 victory which preserved {their|
