Established parties in power are more and more allowing the radical right to set the public discourse, as per a new study carried out in Germany.

Academics discovered that this phenomenon has inadvertently helped radical parties by legitimising their ideas and disseminating them to a broader audience.

Analysis Drawing from Over 20 Years of Media Reporting

The findings, released in the European Journal of Political Research, utilized an automated text analysis of over 520,000 news pieces from six national publications.

Capital-based researchers observed that as the radical faction moved from fringe issues in the 1990s era to core themes like assimilation and migration, mainstream parties increasingly adjusted their messaging in response.

This adjustment boosted the dissemination of these concepts and signaled to voters that such positions were acceptable.

Consequences for Democratic Systems

"Political discourse by established parties plays a central role in the voting performance of the radical right," explained a political sociologist participating in the study.

"This element has been underestimated," she added.

The impact was noticeable even when mainstream groups were condemning the radical faction. "You're still giving them attention," the researcher remarked. "The main point is that because we live in such a struggle for visibility, this attention is key."

Mainstreaming Effect Throughout Europe

While the study was focused on Germany, this mainstreaming phenomenon is probable to apply to countries throughout Europe.

"This is frequently observed in European news outlets," said another researcher. "The far right makes a statement and everybody begins discussing it for one week."

"Even if you're opposing it, you're echoing it," he added.

Toughening of Political Rhetoric

At times, leaders have also hardened their discourse to align with that of the radical right.

In a recent interview, a then German chancellor called for large-scale expulsions and urged them to happen "more often and faster."

Similar examples can be found across Europe, as politicians from countries ranging from the United Kingdom to France embrace the rhetoric of the far right, particularly on immigration.

This has formed an echo chamber that was inconceivable a ten years prior.

Central Issue: Who Sets the Narrative?

"{If you're a centrist political group and you are discussing societal topics – immigration, integration – in a way that is determined by the pace of the radical right, that's the essence of agenda setting," explained a study author.

Some parties have taken additional measures, attempting to emulate the hardline agenda of the far right, even as studies indicates that this approach leads the electorate to vote for the far right.

Progressive Impact and Public Perception

The scope of data collected showed that the influence of radical parties had been gradual and had increased over time.

"Public perception doesn't change from one day to another," stated a co-author. "But if you hear this negative framing around migration every second week, and it is being spread not only by far-right parties but also, for example, by established parties, then of course this storyline gains more traction."

Requirement for Established Parties to Carve Out Their Own Discourses

The study emphasized the necessity for mainstream parties to carve out their own discourses, especially on subjects such as immigration and assimilation, rather than continuously trailing after the radical right.

"It resembles a choreography," explained one researcher. "When the leader is far-right and you're responding to them, you lose the ability to choose which music should be playing."
