Google Plans Investment of $15bn to Build AI Computing Facility in India
Alphabet, Google's holding company Alphabet will invest $15 billion to establish an AI data hub in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.
The infrastructure, which will be set up in the coastal city of the city of Visakhapatnam, will become a component of Google's global network of artificial intelligence hubs located in a dozen nations.
"It stands as the greatest AI facility that we are committing funds to across the globe, apart from the US," Thomas Kurien stated at an conference in the capital city of Delhi this Tuesday, mentioning that the financial commitment is to be distributed over the next five years.
The revelation comes at a time US President Donald Trump has been urging American companies to focus on investments within the country.
The Expanding Position of India in AI Computing
The country has become a key destination for AI data centers. India's low data costs and swiftly increasing internet user base have turned it into a focal point for cloud and AI expansion for tech giants.
"The infrastructure will bring our industry-leading technology to businesses and consumers in the country, speeding up AI development and promoting progress throughout the nation," commented Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet.
Project Details
An official contract to conclude the initiative will be signed this Tuesday, state authorities announced.
"It constitutes a massive leap for the digital progression of our state, innovation, and global standing," said the state's technology minister Nara Lokesh.
The venture will merge computing and artificial intelligence facilities with sustainable power solutions and an broader fiber-optic system.
Andhra Pradesh's Data Center Vision
The venture is part of the Andhra Pradesh government's plan to establish 6 gigawatts of computing facility capacity by 2029.
Data centres are tangible infrastructures that house the computer and network hardware that entities use to gather, analyze, save, and share information.
They contain hosting servers, storage systems and network equipment like routers and firewalls, combined with the required energy and climate management infrastructure to operate them.
Funding Benefits
Within the state, the local administration has been providing reduced-cost property and electricity to entice international investors.
Market Development
India's data centre industry has developed swiftly during the last five years, surpassing the 1GW capacity mark in 2024 and approximately tripling its capability from 2019.
