The Year 2026 Dubbed the Era of the Amphibian Adventure.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent Day of the Devs showcase was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was not the intended one: I am certain that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.
A surprising total of five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these amphibious creatures. Given that a collection of frogs is called an army, it feels they are staking their claim.
A Legacy of Leaping
Frogs are not at all new to the world of games. From the arcade classic Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a niche presence. Yet, their popularity has markedly surged in recent times.
A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam yields an overwhelming flood of results. Although, some of these are obscure titles, a great many are legitimate titles centered on frogs.
A Data-Driven Dive
To grasp this phenomenon, I conducted a thorough analysis into the recent history of hoppy gaming on Steam. My methodology was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.
The data paint a clear picture: a marked rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.
This dramatic growth prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The creature's rising status in the broader culture is also apparent elsewhere, like the popularity of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. However, the trend in gaming looks especially pronounced.
Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage
In my opinion, this is a trend I can get behind. Frogs possess inherent creative potential for game developers.
- Weird Little Guys: They are incredibly easy to be designed as memorable characters that frequently end up as a fan favorite in any game.
- Unique Gameplay: Their long tongues and prehensile tongues lend themselves to a host of unique mechanics.
A number of the featured titles directly leverage these traits. For instance the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
The Leap Into 2026
So, what is the outlook for 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even begun—and the chance for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the most significant year so far.
If these games perform well—and based on past trends, games from this showcase often do—we may indeed be on the verge of a full-blown amphibian entertainment revival.
